Dark architectural shingle roof in Brandon with turtle vents, a gooseneck, and pipe boots

Asphalt · Brandon, FL · December 2025

Turtle vents, pipe boots, and a deck that can breathe

Thomas N. · Hillsborough County

← All projects

The problem

A dark architectural roof with almost no exhaust. The attic was hitting 150°F. GAF — and every other manufacturer — excludes coverage when ventilation is inadequate. Thomas had a new-looking roof that was cooking itself from underneath.

What we did

We did not just add turtles and walk away. Exhaust was sized to the attic, soffit intake was opened so the turtles have air to pull, and every boot was replaced while we were up there. The photo is the field with turtles, a gooseneck, and stacks in a straight story.

The result

Attic temps dropped. The deck can dry. Thomas has a shot at the manufacturer coverage because the exclusion that kills most claims — inadequate ventilation — was actually addressed.

Complexities on this job

  • Climate Zone 2A. Ventilation is not optional if you want the shingle warranty to mean anything
  • Exhaust without intake is a hole in the ridge and a still attic. We open the soffit
  • Boot and vent placement so they do not sit in a valley or a ponding dip
  • Dark shingles absorb more heat. Venting matters more on this color, not less
